Best Laptop For Producing Music

By Matthew Vultaggio

August 25, 2022

Music production used to be something that was confined to the soundproofed walls of professional studios.

But with the advent of powerful portable computers and laptops, those days are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

When it comes to music production from home, or on the go, you cannot underestimate what a good laptop will do for your music production value.

Best Laptop For Producing Music

Being able to plug in a whole range of equipment, as well as having the best and most up-to-date software, means that a powerful laptop has become an absolute must for music production, both producers, and even musicians too!

However, when it comes to music production, power is something that you need for yourself. Having any old laptop won’t cut it in today’s market.

Remember, your laptop needs to be your go-to place when you’re not in the studio.

It needs to be able to record music, plug-in MIDI controllers, microphones, amps, and the like, as well as any music production software you may need.

And, for a massive range of tools like these, a 10-year-old laptop simply isn’t going to cut it.

So, if you are in the business of finding a laptop that can keep up with professional music-production demands, you’re going to need the right tool for the job.

Fortunately, there are at least a few laptop models out there that are ready to meet the challenge.

And we’re going to show them to you!

We’ll show you some of the best laptop models for producing music that you can find out there currently, as well as some of the features that you need to keep in mind whilst searching in this market for yourself.

Apple MacBook Pro 14-Inch

[amazon fields=”B09Z78CH1C” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

When it comes to laptops for producing music, Apple and its long line of products are often toted as some of the best in the industry for combining elegant design with practical hardware and software.

And nowhere is that marriage of user-friendly and cutting-edge technologies more evident than in the MacBook Pro 14.

For music production, you’re unlikely to find a piece of tech that is more packed with processing power and hardware that isn’t a tailor-made piece of music-making equipment.

You’re certainly not going to find one that is as light and portable as this, with it being such a light piece of equipment.

This is the perfect laptop for taking from the studio back to your home setup, or even on the go on a business trip.

Plus, the liquid retina display gives you a perfectly crisp display that makes navigating your programs incredibly clear.

You’re probably not going to find a screen anywhere this crisp on your laptop anywhere else!

This laptop also comes with some excellent speakers too, making it perfect for playing back your music tracks in high fidelity.

Coupled this with the variable amounts of RAM to whatever configuration you’ll need, plus plenty of internal storage space too, and you have a product that is worth every penny of its (admittedly VERY large) price tag.

The very expensive number attached to this product might put some people off, which is understandable.

However, if you are looking for a piece of tech that can do it all, and you can afford it, this is THE laptop you need to get for your music production needs.

Pros

  • Incredible performance
  • Great RAM and Internal Storage
  • Crisp display
  • Excellent speaker configuration.

Cons

  • The screen isn’t particularly large, which may disappoint some buyers. Especially for a product in this price range.

Dell XPS 13 OLED

[amazon fields=”B09DFKQL8K” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

Of course, Apple isn’t the only company that has been playing in the high-end, high-performance models of laptops that can do it all, including high-quality music production.

Dell is another name that pretty much everyone has heard of at this point, and their XPS line is one of the most formidable laptop models out there.

The sleek design of this XPS model, the 13, is both elegant, and also packs in an incredible amount of processing power inside, making it capable of running even the most intense performance-draining software packages, whether it is for producing music, or anything else for that matter.

Plus, the OLED 4K screen gives you a crisp display, meaning that it makes viewing your programs and software very easy on the eyes, as well as making it ideal for watching back movies or other videos.

Great if you’re looking back over footage for music videos!

If you are currently searching for an alternative to the Apple MacBook Pro, as well as one that isn’t going to cost nearly as much on average, then the Dell XPS 13 is a great alternative for creative producers of any kind.

Pros

  • Great design houses an amazing piece of hardware.
  • A light model that is easy to transport.
  • The screen is super clear too!

Cons

  • There are surprisingly few ports for USB and other devices in this laptop, especially for such a high-end model.

Asus VivoBook Pro 16X OLED

[amazon fields=”B09NMS7S1K” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

Asus is another name that is known for creating high-quality laptops that can serve a variety of purposes.

And I am pleased to see that their VivoBook Pro 16X OLED model is also a worthy competitor to the other high-spec models that have been shown to you so far!

As the name of the product suggests, this laptop uses a 4K OLED screen making the images that this laptop produces beautifully clear.

This makes it ideal for viewing videos and movies, whilst also reducing the amount of eye strain that you experience with other models of laptops.

Of course, a laptop shouldn’t just be a pretty screen and not much else. Fortunately, the VivoBook Pro has plenty more to offer!

The Ryzen 9 CPU processor has more than enough speed to work with pretty much any music production software programs that you can find out there.

When you pair that with up to 32 GB of RAM as well as up to a terabyte of hard disk space, there’s probably not a lot that this laptop can’t do!

You’ll be able to run multiple programs at the same time, and without needing to worry about it being too taxing on the hardware.

If you’re looking for a reliable professional laptop that can handle pretty much anything, then this is your port of call!

Pros

  • The display is a beautiful 4K OLED screen.
  • Battery life is great
  • Great CPU, RAM, and disk drive space.
  • DialPad tool is a helpful addition.

Cons

  • The webcam on this device is somewhat subpar.
  • The fingerprint reader isn’t ideal and seems to have some calibration issues.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition

[amazon fields=”B086MP21NF” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

When considering laptops that would make for excellent music-producing models, very few people seem to remember that gaming laptops and PCs are viable options.

After all, with high-grade CPUs and RAM that are necessary to play online games (and often with demanding graphical engines too), they almost certainly have the power to work with the best music production pieces of software too.

And of the gaming laptops out there, we can’t think of a better one available on the market right now than the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition

With an 8-Core, 10th generation i7-10875H CPU built into the studio edition, this is one of the fastest gaming laptops on the market, meaning that it’ll handle your music software with ease.

Plus, there are also plenty of options when it comes to your other key internal hardware specs.

You can choose between 16 or 32 GB of RAM, as well as how much storage space you need, with the local disk drive coming in at both 512 GBs and 1 TB of storage data space.

There’s no chance of lag in your performance with this laptop, that’s for sure!

Pros

  • An incredibly fast processor for gaming is also excellent for music production!
  • A wide 15-Inch screen gives you plenty of screen space too.
  • Lots of options for RAM and SSD storage space.

Cons

  • This laptop is a little on the heavier side, weighing in at 5 pounds.
  • This laptop can get very hot when running a lot of programs. Be careful with how many programs.

Apple MacBook Air

[amazon fields=”B0B3CDZLTB” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

With so many popular and high-quality laptops out there, the fact that another Apple laptop device has made its way onto this list shouldn’t be surprising.

The MacBook Air is a popular option for people who love apple products, but can’t quite afford the high price tag of models such as the MacBook Pro.

Not that you would be getting a subpar product, however.

The M1 chip used in this model still means that you can get some incredible performance out of this product, even better than many of its competitors.

There’s no need to worry about running your music programs on this laptop either, with this smaller and thinner model still containing a decent amount of storage space and RAM too.

Plus, this is a very quiet laptop to use too, as it does not use a fan to cool its processors down.

When you combine these features with an excellent camera and speakers, as well as a battery life of over 15 hours, you have something versatile, and still somehow almost tailor-made for music production too!

If you love Apple products but want something that won’t break the bank, this is the option you should go for.

Pros

  • The design of the MacBook Air is light and elegant.
  • Contains a surprisingly powerful processor, RAM, and hard disk capacity too!
  • Has an excellent battery life.
  • Comes with a great built-in camera and speakers too!

Cons

  • Not having a CPU fan does have some consequences. You may find that performance starts to be hampered once it gets too hot.

Acer Swift 3 SF316-51

[amazon fields=”B093TLYVL9″ value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]

Of course, the options that Apple provides will not be in everyone’s budget now will many of the high-end options here.

If this is a problem that you’re facing, then you should consider a product like the Acer Swift 3.

This is a very comfortable piece of kit to use, no matter what price bracket of laptop you’re used to working with.

Not only that, but the laptop screen also provides a beautifully crisp image, making it great for playing back movies and videos you may also be working on.

There may be some that feel that this isn’t an ideal laptop for you to use for music production, especially if you are on the move with anywhere to charge (the battery life isn’t great).

However, if you are looking for a laptop that won’t cost you a small fortune, then this is a laptop that will serve you well enough.

Pros

  • The build quality of this laptop’s chassis is solid and dependable.
  • Great display setup.
  • USB-C charging port gives the laptop versatility and easy charging options.

Cons

  • The 4-core intel processor isn’t quite as powerful as many other options we have covered.
  • The battery life does seem to drain very quickly. Make sure that you stay close to a wall socket with this device (which somewhat eliminates the point of a laptop…).

Buyer’s Guide

This selection of laptops covers a wide range of platforms and options for you.

However, if you feel that none of these laptops quite fit your needs, and you want to continue searching for yourself, these are the features that you should keep in mind.

CPU

This is probably one of the most important features that a laptop will have, especially those that often need to run multiple tasks.

Having a high CPU (Computer Processing Unit) means that your laptop will be able to run more programs and tasks that can be performed quicker.

Generally speaking, there are a few major CPU processors that you’ll find in computers provided by a few manufacturers: Intel, AMD, and Apple.

Intel CPUs are popular in many windows laptops, and come in a variety of options, from the least powerful, the i3, up to i9.

If the laptop you’re choosing is using an intel processor, make sure that it is at least i5 for your music production needs.

AMD is a popular CPU provider for gaming laptops with their Ryzen units, with them having a similar numbering system. Make sure that you have at least an R5 of this model.

Apples use their CPU processors and are known for being excellent for creative pieces of software.

If the apple product you are viewing has an M1 chip, then this will likely be enough to support your CPU needs for music production.

RAM

RAM (or Random Access Memory), is the short-term memory of your laptop, that is very important for music producers and musicians that want to make sure that their audio playback comes through how it is recorded.

8 GB of RAM should be the absolute minimum amount that you should be looking for, with most laptops ideally having at least 16 GB of RAM.

Internal Storage Space

Every laptop should have a decent amount of storage in it for containing all sorts of files, from audio mp3s to video mp3s and everything else, and saves on needing external drives to store your files on, which can get corrupted over time.

Many laptops will come with either Solid State Drives (SSD) or Hard Disk Drives (HDD)

Portability

Laptops should ideally be easy to transport around and weigh very little to do this.

For a general guide, if your laptop weighs more than 5 pounds, you’ll probably find that you have a pretty hefty piece of kit that you have to lug around.

This should be the maximum weight for your music production laptop.

Battery Life

This is the other main appeal of a good laptop, being away from a wall socket whilst you are working.

Generally speaking, 6 to 7 hours should be the lowest that a decent laptop’s battery will last for, with 10 and above being a decent single charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Even Produce Music On Just A Laptop?

As we have hopefully demonstrated to you, many of these laptops, with the right microphone and extra equipment (or just a DAW like Ableton Live or Logic Pro), are more than capable of producing music on their own.

It’s why they are becoming so popular!

What Graphics Card Should My Laptop Have For Producing Music?

Your laptop should have something equivalent to a GTX 1660 card for most music production software programs, such as Digital Audio Workstation, which is many people’s go-to program for music production.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, finding a laptop that is perfect for producing music is relatively easy.

The tricky part now is deciding on just one!

Some of my favorite music marketing tools

Thank you for reading this article, my friend, and I hope you found it helpful as you build your own successful career in music. 🙂

Here is a list of my favorite and most recommended tools and resources that I’ve personally used to get my music streamed over 4,000,000 times on Spotify as an artist.

Any of the paid services or tools listed here are most likely affiliate links, so if you do decide to use any of them, I’ll earn a small commission.

But in all honesty, these are the exact tools that I personally use, love, and recommend to anyone – including my own friends and family.

Music Distribution

To get your music on Spotify on all the other streaming services, I use DistroKid because you get unlimited song uploads for a low annual price.

If you want to learn more about DistroKid and music distribution, check out the in-depth DistroKid review that I’ve put together.

Or, if you want to get started with DistroKid right now, you can save on your first year with the DistroKid discount.

Facebook Ads For Spotify Success

Although Facebook Ads can be a real pain to get working properly, there is no denying that they are incredible for growing Spotify streams and getting your music in front of real fans.

This is why I’ve put together a completely free course that you can check out called Facebook Ads For Musicians’ Spotify Streams. 🙂

Music Publishing Royalties Collection

For collecting all of the publishing, mechanical, and live performance royalties owed to me whenever my music gets streamed or played, my go-to is Songtrust.

Songtrust is a publishing administration company which means that in addition to collecting all of those royalties for me, they do it on a global level.

To learn if Songtrust is right for you, I’d recommend checking out this article on Songtrust vs BMI.

And if you want to get started with Songtrust right now, I’d recommend learning about the Songtrust discount code so that you can get the best price. 🙂

Website & Smart Links

I’m personally not a big fan of the link-in-bio and smart links for music pages like ToneDen and Hyppeddit.

Instead, I prefer having a full-blown WordPress website that allows me to have a full website in addition to unlimited music links.

For getting started with this, I really like Bluehost because it is the cheapest and a theme called Thrive Themes because it is the most flexible and easiest to use.

I’ve actually created a free Smart Links Course that you can take to learn how to get set up and start getting more streams with custom smart links (I’ve even included the templates I am using!).

Want more tools and resources for your music career?

If you’d like to see even more of my favorite marketing tools and resources for musicians and music artists, I’ve created an even larger list on this page: Best Marketing Tools & Resources For Musicians (& Music Artists).

P.S. There are even some free tools and resources included on that page as well! 🙂
